New Acropolis Museum celebrates its second birthday

The New Acropolis Museum in Athens celebrates its second birthday today.

In the two years since it opened, it has proved to be one of the most popular tourist destinations in Greece, attracting huge numbers of visitors. It has altered the nature of arguments over the Parthenon Marbles, stopping the British Museum from using their previous excuse that the Greeks have nowhere to put the sculptures if they were returned. Very few people who have visited the Parthenon Gallery at the New Acropolis Museum will concede that it is not a better location than the British Museum in which to exhibit all of the surviving Parthenon Marbles.
