The Directorate of Museums division of the Greek Ministry of Culture, has approved a proposal to re-open the old Acropolis Museum building, which has remained empty since 2009.
The proposal includes plans to renovate the interior of the building giving it a modern feel. The new museum will house fragments of the Parthenon currently scattered around the monument as well as a conservation laboratory, visible to visitors. The museum will also contain material from the chronicle of the restoration work done on the Parthenon. The exterior of the building will remain in its present form.
The proposed reopening of the old museum, is expected to result in a 40% reduction of storage containers, which are currently located on the Acropolis site.
