A resounding NO to UNESCO mediation by the British government and British Museum

The British Government and the British Museum have issued a formal response declining to take part in the UNESCO mediation process for the resolution of the Parthenon Sculptures issue. Greece initiated the mediation in the summer of 2013.

Two separate letters have been issued one on behalf of the Department for Culture Media and Sport and the other on behalf of the Trustees of the British Museum.

It is evident that both British government officials and the trustees of the British Museum have not offered any new arguments supporting their decision. Both maintain that the Parthenon Sculptures were legally purchased by Lord Elgin and as such belong to the British Museum.
