The Parthenon Sculptures: Two hundred years since their appropriation by the British Museum

Distinguished Greek and foreign archaeologists, restorers and reputable lawyers presented the results of more recent research and the latest developments on the Parthenon Sculptures, with representatives from 14 national reunification committees, at the International Scientific Conference organized by the Athenian Association at the Acropolis Museum on the 24th and 25th September. The conference was organised under the auspices of the President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr. Prokopis Pavlopoulos.

New data was presented from Lord Elgin’s files on the way the Parthenon Frieze was removed, as well as issues with replacing the fragments currently in the British Museum, the loss of the Mentor and research conducted using the Ottoman Archives in Istanbul. A number of legal aspects were also presented. The various presentations brought new life to the matter for reunification of the Parthenon Sculptures.
